It's putting the catalogs on SSD that gave me the biggest performance boost in working with roughly 200k RAW files. However, for simply accessing RAW files, a single USB 3.0 drive might be fast enough. Now, for video a RAID 0 might be helpful. Why? SSD is much faster (10x-20x) than even a HD-based RAID 0 for accessing very large numbers of very small files, which is what libraries and catalogs are made of. However, I put my Aperture libraries and Lightroom catalogs on an SSD.
It's about 50-100% faster than a single USB 3.0 drive, and makes access to large data (RAW files) plenty perky. I have a 4TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt for all my media files.
Why do you want a 3TB RAID 0? Is it for speed?įWIW, here's my setup and experience. You can get 3TB and even 4TB single drives. For the sake of cost and simplicity, I was thinking of getting a two-bay enclosure, configured with RAID 0. I'd have another external USB drive to back up my RAID, though it would be once a day and not real-time. I'd like to keep all of my music, photo and video files on an external drive, which is why I was looking into a TB3 RAID 0 drive.
